In the logistics industry, safety management is a fundamental priority, and CJ Logistics continuously fosters employees' safety awareness through ongoing innovation and improvements. In June 2023, CJ Logistics unveiled a Safety Experience Center within the Mega Hub Gonjiam, Korea's largest logistics hub. Spanning 230 square meters, this training facility features 42 VR devices and offers a comprehensive 190-hour program, significantly contributing to the prevention of workplace accidents and fostering a culture of safety.
However, CJ Logistics' commitment to safety did not end there. One year later, the center underwent an extensive renewal and was reborn as a revamped and upgraded Safety Experience Center.
Raising Awareness of Accidents, It Starts with Experience
In July 2024, a year after the Safety Experience Center first opened, the innovative technology company CJ Logistics upgraded the facility with new features. Divided into an Accident Experience Zone and a Health Zone, the upgraded center integrates interactive programs with existing virtual reality equipment to provide enhanced and advanced content.
Occupational safety training is conducted in the Accident Experience Zone. A significant enhancement compared to the previous setup is the introduction of practical training equipment. These tools replicate safety scenarios commonly encountered in logistics environments, such as a metal weight dropped from a height of 0.8 meters, a ladder with collapsing footholds, and electrical devices that deliver shocks similar to those caused by electric currents.
Even in a controlled environment equipped with safety gear, the "realistic scenarios" can make participants tense. The heavy metal weight dropping onto a helmet demonstrates the proper way to wear it and highlights its critical importance. Similarly, the risk of falling from a ladder during elevated work and the sensation of an electric shock reinforce the importance of electrical safety. Experiencing these potential safety hazards firsthand naturally instills a greater awareness of accidents and their prevention.
CJ Logistics’ safety experience solutions have extended beyond the renewal of the Safety Experience Center and are being implemented across various workplaces. A prime example is the CPR kiosk installed at the company headquarters. Unlike traditional CPR training, which required a large space, instructors, and multiple mannequins, this kiosk only needs to be connected to a monitor, allowing anyone to easily follow video instructions and practice. This innovation is expected to make CPR, the fastest and most effective lifesaving method in emergencies, a cornerstone of the company’s safety culture.
By the end of last year, approximately 1,800 employees had completed CPR training, and the program is set to expand to all employees by 2025. Additionally, to ensure the training is not a one-time event, it will be mandatory for employees to undergo CPR training at least once every three years. This initiative aims to equip employees with the ability to respond swiftly to emergencies, both at work and in everyday life.
Interview with the Project Manager
Q. What was the reason for renewing the safety equipment and programs?
A. Until now, training was conducted using VR devices in a completely safe environment. However, virtual experiences alone have limitations when it comes to replicating the realism of actual situations. To address this and offer a more enhanced program, we decided to introduce practical training equipment.
Q. What is the most significant change?
A. The biggest change is that we now simulate accident scenarios that employees might realistically encounter, aligning with the purpose of the renewal. By creating more immersive experiences, the level of engagement during training has significantly improved. Of course, the existing virtual reality training is still available. Combining indirect virtual experiences with direct practical training has maximized the overall effectiveness of the program.
Q. How have employees responded?
A. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Employees have shared that experiencing the tangible risks of accidents firsthand has greatly heightened their sense of caution and awareness.
As the leading logistics company in Korea, operating the most extensive safety training facilities and accident prevention programs, CJ Logistics continues to enhance its safety capabilities with the belief that the foundation of innovative logistics starts with safety.
