A Resource Circulation MOU was signed with the Regional Association of Childcare Centers, SIG Combibloc Korea, and Daeheung Recycling.

Innovative technology company CJ Logistics will establish a virtuous cycle, recycling paper packs disposed of at childcare centers into resources.

On the 20th, CJ Logistics announced that it had signed a business agreement for the ‘Milky Way Project for Resource Circulation and a Sustainable Future’ at the CJ Logistics West Busan branch in Dong-gu, Busan, along with the Yeongnam Regional Association of Childcare Centers, SIG Combibloc Korea, and Daeheung Recycling.

Collecting 5.35 Million Paper Packs from around 4,000 Childcare Centers… Upcycling into Recycled Sketchbooks

The crux of this business agreement is to collect paper packs discharged from about 4,000 childcare centers in Daegu, Busan, Pohang, and Gyeongnam regions through CJ Logistics’ O-NE service and to construct a resource circulation model by recycling them into products like recycled sketchbooks.

The children's milk cartons are cleaned thoroughly and gathered in collection boxes at each childcare center. Upon request, CJ Logistics collects the parcels and transports them to the Daeheung Recycling factory located in Busan. Once arriving at the factory, the paper packs go through optical sorting lines and are reborn as paper products like recycled sketchbooks. By leveraging CJ Logistics’ extensive national logistics network, collection efficiency is heightened by the timely retrieval of paper packs according to each childcare center’s situation.

CJ Logistics forecasts that a total of 5.35 million paper packs will be collected through the project, implemented over two years starting from October. Translating the monthly paper pack discharge of a childcare center to approximately 100 packs (3kg), 144 tons of paper packs will be recycled. This equates to conserving 2,880 twenty-year-old pine trees and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 11 tons annually. To produce one ton of paper packs, 20 twenty-year-old pine trees are used, and one tree absorbs 3.5kg of carbon dioxide annually.

Furthermore, environmental education targeting children will also be carried out. The Association of Childcare Centers, in collaboration with Daeheung Recycling, will develop and provide diverse educational content, including proper paper pack separation and discharge methods. The purpose is to elevate children’s awareness of the environment and encourage spreading it to households. Global packaging solution company SIG Combibloc Korea supports educational content development costs and logistics costs incurred in resource circulation.

Preservation of 2,880 Twenty-Year-Old Pine Trees, Effect of Reducing 11 Tons of Carbon, Dioxide

Paper packs made from high-quality pulp, can be recycled into various forms, such as tissues, paper, and hand towels, proving their high resource value. However, as of 2021, the domestic paper pack recycling rate is 14%, considerably below the mandatory recycling rate of 22.8%. The mandatory recycling rate is a regulated ratio that obligates producers to recycle a certain amount of waste, considering separate collection and recycling conditions.

Kim Hee-jun, ESG Manager of CJ Logistics, explained, “This meaningful project will not only contribute to the efficient recycling of waste resources but also instill the right awareness of the environment in children, the protagonists of the future,” and added, “We will continue to lead in ESG management and contribute to the national community by promoting various and differentiated resource circulation models.”

This marks CJ Logistics’ third resource circulation project. Previously, CJ Logistics launched the ‘Save the Planet Alliance’ campaign, recycling PET bottles disposed of by hotels into cosmetic containers for six months since last December. Following that, from August this year, in collaboration with the Korea National Park Service, it has been conducting a resource circulation project, collecting aluminum cans disposed of in national parks across the country and recycling them into steel materials.
