Director Kyung-Hoon Kim at TES Logistics Technology Research Institute is a frontline striker at CJ Logistics, leading the logistics technology innovations. He is one of the top robot experts in Korea who has received a doctor’s degree in mobile robots from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology (KAIST), one of Korea’s leading universities for science and technology. At TES Logistics Technology Research Institute, Kim is in charge of the development of autonomous mobile robots (AMRs), automated guided vehicles (AGVs), and robots that integrate AI and big data.

Stressing the stereotype that the logistics industry involves a lot of physical labor is prejudice, Kim pointed towards robotics where technological development is taking place most actively in the logistics industry.

AMRs can move around the logistics center freely and are already used widely in convergence fulfillment centers at CJ Logistics. Kim said that they are planning to deploy about 170 autonomous delivery robots like AMRs and AGVs by the end of this year.

Automated loading and unloading are also underway. Their goal is to first improve efficiency through the use of semi-automatic tools and adopting a new conveyer belt;
second, to achieve complete automation by developing robotic arms based on AI and robot control technology; and third, to develop wearable robotics for on-site workers.

There is a paradigm shift in the logistics industry, from a labor and experience-intensive industry to a more digital-intensive industry for the logistics industry to make way for more advanced and complex technology encompassing almost all areas, from extensive automation, AI, and big data. In order to adapt to the changing logistics paradigm and lead innovations, TES Logistics Technology Research Institute set up core TES technologies and the master plan for achieving the core technologies.
“We identified the technology level and situations in Korea and abroad to select our core technologies. They can be conceptualized as automation, intelligence, and optimization, and we will make efforts to accelerate the speed of technological development and commercialization.

Director Kim plans to double the size of the research institute by 2023 by continuously recruiting the best talent in AI, big data, and logistics IT system to secure core TES technologies and capabilities that far exceed the competition. He also expressed his willingness to build a corporate culture in which people can deliver outstanding results through system and support such as offering equal opportunities, rewards based on performance, and education system that support individual growth.

Lowering Work Intensity and Speeding up Logistics with Autonomous Delivery Robots!
Chuljoo Yoon of the TES Logistics Technology Research Institute

Seventy percent of work in the logistics center where you find, sort, and pack ordered merchandizes is performed while on the move. Logistics work involves a lot of labor with on-site workers walking as much as 20km a day. This is why autonomous delivery robots are an effective solution that lowers labor intensity and increases work speed. As the heart of logistics service has shifted to fulfillment, the robots are becoming more important than ever as they become an integrated logistics service that takes over tasks like product storage, sorting, packing, delivery, and stock management.

Yoon, the Managing Director of the Future Technology Team at TES Logistics Technology Research Institute, researches and develops robots for logistics efficiency. He is primarily responsible for AGVs that travel along a fixed route, AMR, and picking support robots.
We plan to place over 100 AGVs that move multiple layers of racks in fulfillment centers. Robots that deliver other racks, from which workers have taken out products and sorted them, and transfer the racks to the packing lines, are a technology developed first by CJ Logistics.

Yoon also explained about his plans for introducing AMRs and how he plans to use them. AMRs are robots that move autonomously according to the given situation using embedded maps, cameras, and sensors like LiDAR. The pilot-run AMRs queue in the area designated for products ordered. They then scan the products and put them in baskets attached to the AMRs. AMRs automatically inspect them and carry them to the packing area. The introduction of AMRs will reduce the work intensity of workers and are expected to lower human errors from manual work.
I have high expectations on collaborative robots that help with picking jobs by either waiting for workers or following them around. If we apply robot arm technology, that will mark the beginning of full automation of our logistics centers.

We are not too far away from advanced logistics meaning robots carry boxes and racks and work 24 hours around the clock. Yoon is working to realize a fast and safe collaboration between human workers and AMRs.

Lowering Accelerating Logistics Innovation with Cutting-edge Technology-based consulting
Keechan Nahm of Consulting Team at TES Logistics Technology Research Institute

At TES Logistics Technology Research Institute, Park researches AMRs that automatically deliver products to workers, AGVs, and piece picking robots (robot arms that take individual products and move them to conveyer belts or boxes automatically). Logistics automation technology using robots is an advanced future technology that seeks innovation in the logistics sector. The technology that can handle a lot of heavy loads quickly in logistics centers is transforming logistics.

Digital twins researched and developed in the TES Logistics Technology Research Institute are tested in logistics centers that need to adopt them in their production sites in affiliate companies. We could concentrate on doing this research because we were able to communicate closely with people at the site and apply new technologies immediately.

The logistics industry is evolving into digital logistics driven by technology and data. To that end, the industry has a variety of tasks ahead, including automation using robot technology, and 24h operation optimization based on AI and big data.

Please look forward to the remarkable performance of the research trio at the TES Logistics Technology Research Institute who are designing the future of logistics based on differentiated capabilities and cutting-edge technologies.
